ROLES

Lead Designer

JOBS TO BE DONE

The product is designed to validate learners remotely, support students with special needs, and enable large-scale assessments like entrance exams through secure identity verification and monitoring—extending the capabilities of traditional testing facilities. However, as a developer-centric tool, it presents significant usability challenges, leading to frequent user frustration and a less-than-optimal experience.

OBJECTIVE

The primary goal is to enhance the experience for both exam takers and organizers, while also establishing a foundational design system. My role is the sole designer on this project, working within a structured agile environment alongside the Product Owner and development team.

ACTIVITIES

Timeline is From May 2021 to Jul 2021 (<=3 month), design + development + Design system + follow up support. The activities include Design Sprints, Concept Design Workshops, User Journey Mapping, Kick-off and Co-creation sessions, Design Critiques, Design Specifications, Developer Support, defining Success Metrics, User Testing, and Data Tracking.

Design made great impact to their product and process of working.

ProctorExam offers a seamless setup for remote proctoring, supporting both students and exam organizers. Students benefit from a dual-view proctoring system that allows for flexible monitoring options, including screen sharing and a 360° view of their workspace via smartphones. For organizers, ProctorExam provides a fully web-based platform to design and run remote exams, either as a stand-alone solution or integrated within an existing assessment environment.

Refresh the Design Language System to maintain consistent experience

We began building our design system for several important reasons. One of the biggest challenges was tackling this effort with a relatively small team, while our main focus remained on delivering new features and continuous value to customers. After a year of dedicated design and development, the system has provided us with structured, reusable components that significantly accelerate the product development process. With these new components in place, we can now maintain consistency across the entire platform much more effectively.

User Research & Validation

A comprehensive user research plan has been developed to validate the experience of both exam organizers and exam takers, ensuring that the product meets the needs of all stakeholders involved. This plan focuses on understanding how organizers set up, manage, and monitor exams, as well as how exam takers navigate, complete, and reflect on their assessments. By conducting interviews, usability testing, and feedback sessions, the research will uncover pain points, highlight areas for improvement, and validate that the workflows are intuitive and efficient. The benefits of this approach include building confidence that the design supports real-world scenarios, improving overall usability, and reducing the risk of costly redesigns after launch. Ultimately, this research will help deliver a more streamlined, fair, and engaging exam experience, while empowering organizers with tools that simplify their tasks and enhance reliability.

User Research Plan

We outlined a structured usability research plan focusing on identifying friction points for exam-takers using ProctorExam, aiming to improve clarity, ease of setup, and the exam-taking experience.

value & impact

A completely new product experience has been created, combining a refreshed visual design system with redesigned user flows to deliver a more modern, consistent, and intuitive interaction for users. The visual design system introduces standardized components, typography, and color palettes that not only strengthen brand identity but also ensure coherence across different modules and touchpoints. At the same time, the user flows have been carefully rethought and simplified, removing unnecessary friction and making each step of the journey more efficient and engaging. Together, these improvements provide users with a seamless, polished experience that feels both familiar and innovative, while also giving our teams the foundation to scale features and maintain consistency across future releases.
